‘Time to make a deal’: Trump reveals ongoing US-Iran discussions amid tension
U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed reports suggesting that diplomatic contacts between the United States and Iran had been suspended, asserting that discussions between the two sides remain ongoing despite growing tensions in the Middle East.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump directly challenged media reports that claimed communication between Washington and Tehran had stopped in recent days.
“Fake News reports that the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the U.S.A., stopped speaking a few days ago are false and erroneous. The conversations between us have been going on continuously, including four days ago, three days ago, two days ago, one day ago, and today. Where they lead, one never knows, but as I told Iran, ‘It’s time, one way or another, for you to make a deal. You’ve been doing this for 47 years, and it cannot be allowed to go on any longer!’” Trump wrote.
The statement came amid speculation that diplomatic efforts between the two countries had been disrupted following heightened regional tensions and military developments involving Iran and its regional allies. Several reports had suggested that ongoing discussions had either slowed down or been suspended, prompting uncertainty over the future of negotiations.
Trump’s remarks indicate that communication channels between the two governments remain open, even as major disagreements continue over regional security issues and Iran’s nuclear programme. While the U.S. president did not provide details about the nature of the discussions, he emphasized that engagement had continued without interruption over the past several days.
The United States and Iran have remained engaged in indirect diplomatic contacts through intermediaries in recent months as both sides explored possibilities for reducing tensions and addressing long-standing disputes. Negotiations have unfolded against the backdrop of heightened instability across the Middle East, including conflicts involving Iranian-backed groups and concerns over broader regional escalation.
Trump’s latest comments also underscore his administration’s continued focus on securing a diplomatic agreement with Tehran. By urging Iran to “make a deal,” the president signaled that Washington remains interested in pursuing negotiations despite ongoing challenges.
The remarks have drawn significant attention internationally, as the status of U.S.-Iran contacts remains a key factor influencing regional security, global energy markets and diplomatic efforts by international stakeholders seeking to prevent further escalation.
While Trump acknowledged uncertainty about the outcome of the talks, his statement sought to dispel suggestions that dialogue between Washington and Tehran had collapsed. For now, the president’s comments indicate that diplomatic engagement between the two countries remains active, even as questions persist about whether the discussions can ultimately produce a breakthrough agreement.
