Missile and drone attack on cargo ship near Iraq, Iran itself took responsibility

New Delhi: The ongoing tension in the Middle East is showing no sign of abating. Amid the ongoing conflict in the region, two powerful explosions on a cargo ship in the Gulf region on Monday made the situation more serious. The special thing is that Iran itself has taken responsibility for this attack. Iranian officials say that their security forces targeted a cargo ship near Iraq’s Umm Qasr port. The media department of the Iraqi Port Company has confirmed that the cargo ship in question was sighted in the vicinity of Umm Qasr port.

According to local officials, the attack took place about 40 nautical miles south-east of the port. After the incident, security agencies became active in the area and investigation into the matter was started. In view of the increasing danger on sea routes, this incident is also being monitored at the international level. The Gulf region is considered one of the most important trade sea routes in the world, so such incidents can also affect global trade.

IRGC took responsibility for the action

According to the report of Iranian news channel IRINN, this entire operation was carried out by the Navy of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The report claimed that this action was part of a special military operation. In the information released by Iran, it was said that this attack was part of its strategic response. However, more detailed information in this regard has not been made public.

First attack by cruise missile

Iran has claimed that it targeted the cargo ship named ‘Sariska’ with a cruise missile. It was told that the missile directly hit the part of the ship, causing a massive explosion there. After the explosion, news of heavy damage to the ship came to light. Experts believe that attacking a ship sailing in the sea with a cruise missile is considered a complex military action, which requires precise target determination.

Second strike by drone after missile

International maritime safety agency United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also shared information regarding the incident. According to the agency, the right side of the ship was attacked by a missile or other missile, after which a big explosion was seen. After some time, there was a second explosion on the ship. Preliminary investigation revealed that the explosion was probably caused by a drone attack.

Officials believe that the attack was carried out through two different means in succession with the aim of causing major damage to the ship. After two consecutive explosions, a massive fire broke out in the ship. Due to the fire in the middle of the sea, there was chaos among the people present on the ship. It is a matter of relief that the fire was controlled in time through emergency efforts.
