According to religious beliefs, the doors of Kedarnath Dham are opened every year on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. This time the festival of Akshaya Tritiya is falling at the end of April, around which the doors are expected to open. However, the official date of opening of the doors is announced by the temple committee on the day of Mahashivratri, when the priest and Tirtha Purohit decide the auspicious time by looking at the almanac.
Before the doors open, Baba Kedarnath’s procession leaves for Kedarnath from Omkareshwar temple with traditional rituals. This journey creates an atmosphere of special faith and enthusiasm among the devotees while passing through many stops. Devotees welcome the doli at various places on the way and offer prayers.
