Assam: Love Jihad accused Asif dies in police encounter; Shot was fired at the team that had gone to recover the murder weapon.

On Monday (June 1), the police killed the main accused Rose Ali alias Asif Khan in a major encounter in Mukalamua in Nalbari district of Assam. Rose Ali was accused of brutally murdering 19-year-old Hindu youth Madhurjya Burman and fatally attacking her 18-year-old cousin Mridumudra Deka, who was studying in class 12. During the police action, the accused tried to escape and snatched the service gun of the police and opened fire, after which he was killed in self-defense.

This heinous incident took place when Madhurjya Burman and Mridumudra Deka were returning home on a scooter after purchasing books from Nalbari city. Rose Ali and his other companion Ashiq Ali stopped them on the way near Gangapur in Mukalamua. Rose Ali had been pressurizing Mridumudra for marriage for a long time, which she had completely rejected. In anger over this, Rose Ali attacked both the brothers and sisters with a sickle.

Madhurjya Burman, who was seriously injured in the attack, was taken to Nalbari Medical College Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries. Mridumudra Deka was referred to Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in a very critical condition, where she is fighting for her life and death.

Giving information about the condition of the victim, GMCH Superintendent said, “The patient suffered multiple knife injuries, including wounds on the head, jaw, right arm, back and scapula. He is currently in the ICU, where he is undergoing necessary tests. His condition is critical, and he is in shock.”

Mridumudra’s family has revealed that accused Rose Ali was harassing their daughter for a long time. Sharing her horrifying experience, the victim’s mother candidly said, “Roz Ali has been harassing my daughter and me for a long time, especially after my daughter refused his proposal. He even threatened me with dire consequences if my daughter did not enter into a relationship with him.”

Since the murder incident, the accused was hiding in a chaur (island in the middle of the river) of Mukalamua. Nalbari Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bibekanand Das said that after arresting the accused, he took the police team to the place where he had hidden the murder weapon. But as soon as he reached there, he suddenly snatched the policeman’s service gun and tried to run away.

SSP Das told the media, “Such criminals are rarely found these days. He had snatched our service gun and tried to escape while firing at our team.”

According to the police, Rose Ali fired about four rounds at the police team. The police retaliated in self-defense, in which Rose Ali was shot in the chest. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead due to excessive bleeding.

There is an uproar in entire Assam after this heinous massacre. The deceased Madhurjya Barman was an active member of All Assam Students Union (AASU), due to which the workers of the organization and local citizens staged a strong demonstration demanding justice.

Along with this, organizations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and Hindu Suraksha Sena took out rallies against the increasing crimes in the state and completely blocked Kumarikata Road. The protesters clearly said that the limit of tolerance against the elements targeting the daughters of the majority community has now been crossed.

Amidst this entire incident and public anger, Nalbari local MLA Jayant Malla Barua met the victim’s family and assured all possible help from the government. Calling the case a straight case of ‘Love Jihad’, she said, “Love Jihad is fast emerging as a serious social concern in Assam. We all must remain vigilant and ensure that the strictest action is taken against such incidents. The tragic incident in Gangapur, Nalbari has shocked and disturbed all of us. The police administration is working swiftly, and we are confident that the Assam Police will take necessary action.”

MLA Barua further said, “I met the father and brother of the deceased and assured them of the government’s full support. The police are conducting a thorough investigation and are also looking into whether the accused had any associates.”

The police is now investigating in depth whether apart from Ashiq Ali, who was involved with Rose Ali, any other external element or organization was also involved in this entire conspiracy and attack. Security has been beefed up in the area and the situation is being closely monitored.
