Why Smart Meter Campaign?
According to Mahavitran, a campaign to install smart meters is being implemented to provide customers with accurate billing, control of power consumption and benefit of ‘Time of Day’ (TOD) concession. These meters are being installed free of cost to consumers.
Important role of system
With smart meters, customers get hourly information about their home or office electricity consumption through an app on their mobile phones. This makes it easy to plan the electricity consumption and helps to avoid unnecessary consumption. Besides making power distribution management more effective, Mahavitaran has said that this system plays an important role in preventing power leakage.
What is TOD’ discount:
At what time was the electricity consumed? Accordingly Time of Day (TOD) concession to provide concession in electricity tariff
is called Smart meters thus have the facility to measure electricity consumption over time. Consumers also know how much electricity is being consumed at home or office every hour in their mobile phone app. TOD discount has also been introduced for domestic customers due to smart meters.
80 paisa discount per unit for domestic customers:
TOD discount of up to 80 paisa per unit is being given to household customers who have installed smart meters on electricity consumption during a certain period of the day. Apart from this, industrial and commercial consumers are also getting the benefit of discount in electricity tariff for electricity consumption between 9 am to 5 pm.
According to Mahavitran, consumer response is increasing as smart meters offer accurate billing, control over power consumption and discounted rates.
“Thanks to smart meters, customers are getting accurate billing, real-time monitoring of electricity consumption and ‘Time of Day’ (TOD) discounts. Household customers who have installed smart meters are getting a discount of up to 80 paisa per unit. Due to this, customer response is increasing and the campaign to install smart meters in the state has gained a good momentum”, said Bharat Pawar, Chief Public Relations Officer of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution.
