500 days, 234 seats and ‘walk alone’, what does Annamalai want from BJP?
Former IPS officer and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader K Annamalai is in the news these days. There is talk that he may leave BJP and form his own party. On Tuesday, he met BJP President Nitin Naveen and then Union Home Minister Amit Shah to tender his resignation. At present, Annamalai’s steps have stopped after the meeting with Amit Shah. It is being said that discussions are going on in BJP regarding what Annamalai wants and if the party agrees then Annamalai can be stopped. Annamalai, who has been opposing both Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIDMK) in Tamil Nadu, wants to go alone on all the seats.
June 4 is Annamalai’s birthday and there is a lot of talk that he can take a big decision on this day. However, a change has been seen after his meeting with Amit Shah. Earlier in Tamil Nadu, Annamalai was being shown different from BJP by putting up posters. Now similar posters have started being clarified. After this, rumors have started that Annamalai can stay in BJP and can also get the condition of working as per his wish fulfilled.

What does Annamalai want?
According to reports, after the victory of Joseph Vijay in Tamil Nadu, Annamalai is reminding the BJP leadership of his own plan. Interestingly, in order to form an alliance with AIADMK, BJP was forced to remove Annamalai from the post of state president. BJP wanted an alliance with AIADMK under any circumstances. At the same time, Annamalai had repeatedly said that for BJP to establish its foothold in Tamil Nadu, the party should go alone. Unlike BJP, Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) did the same and formed the government.
An old video of Annamalai is again in discussion regarding this. In this video of the year 2024, Annamalai says, ‘Two things will happen between 2024 and 2026. In 2026, no party will be able to form the government by getting majority alone. Tamil Nadu will see a new alliance form its government for the first time. If a party like BJP works professionally between 2024 to 2026, works hard and works to prepare grassroots leaders for all 234 seats and presents these candidates to the public at least 500 days in advance, then its chances of victory are more.

This prediction of Annamalai proved to be hundred percent true. No party got majority in the 2026 elections and a new kind of coalition formed the government. In her old video, Annamalai had said, ‘National parties have their own problems. BJP also has it. BJP is a cadre based party. The politics of Tamil Nadu is a bit different. BJP will have to take risk and we will have to field candidates 500 days in advance, then that election will be ours. Everyone will have to show courage. When the party is ready, the cadre is ready, we will win.
Annamalai was strengthening BJP in Tamil Nadu
Annamalai was successful to some extent as the President of Tamil Nadu BJP. For the first time, under his leadership, BJP seemed to be getting stronger in Tamil Nadu also. Annamalai was the President of Tamil Nadu BJP at the time of 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Then BJP did not form alliance with AIADMK. BJP, which contested with Pattali Makkal Katchi, AMMK and Rashtriya Samaj Paksha, did not win a single seat but there was a tremendous increase in its vote percentage. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP, which contested on 23 Lok Sabha seats, got more votes than Congress, that is, 11.4 percent votes, while it contested on 9 seats and got 10.8 percent votes. Then Annamalai himself contested the elections from Coimbatore seat and was at second position by getting 4.5 lakh votes.

At the time of alliance with AIADMK, Annamalai was removed from the post of President and Nayanar Nagendran got the post in his place. Another interesting thing is that Annamalai had earlier been criticizing DMK as well as AIADMK. Probably for this reason the talk of alliance was not possible during his tenure. Now BJP got a total of 27 assembly seats in the AIADMK alliance. Out of 27, BJP won only 1 seat while PMK won 4 seats out of 18 seats it contested. BJP’s vote percentage this time is only 2.97 percent.
