Massive fire in Malviya Nagar: 20 people died, 37 were rescued due to fire in the restaurant.
At least 20 people died in a massive fire in the Malviya Nagar area of the national capital Delhi on Wednesday (June 3) morning, while 37 people were safely evacuated and taken to the hospital. This accident happened in the Lemon Green restaurant located in Hauz Rani area of South Delhi, where after the fire, there was an atmosphere of chaos in the entire area.
According to officials, the fire broke out in the multi-storey restaurant building around 8:50 am on Wednesday. Within no time the fire engulfed a large part of the building. After receiving information about the incident, teams of fire department, police and other emergency agencies reached the spot and relief and rescue operations were started.
According to reports, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received information about the incident at around 9:45 am. As soon as the information was received, several fire engines and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the spot. Fire brigade personnel carried out the operation to control the fire as well as rescue people trapped in the building.
Delhi Fire Service said in its initial statement that 37 people trapped in the basement of the building were rescued safely. All were admitted to various hospitals with the help of CATS ambulance, where their treatment is ongoing.
Delhi Police has confirmed that 20 people have lost their lives in this accident. According to police, 37 people evacuated from the building have been admitted to hospitals. Officials said that the actual condition of the injured and assessment of the seriousness of their injuries would be clear only after medical examination by doctors.
South District Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) official Jitendra Kumar said the emergency response mechanism was activated as soon as information about the incident was received. He said that based on initial information, the fire probably started from the restaurant operating on the ground floor. However, the actual cause of the fire is not yet known and a detailed investigation is being conducted.
The administration has started investigating the matter. Aspects of the cause of the fire, adherence to safety standards and possible negligence will also be investigated. At present, the focus is on providing medical aid to the victims along with relief and rescue work.
