For IPTA, drama is not just entertainment but a medium to build a better society.

On the recent return of the play “Azadi Ke Tarane” produced by the Indore unit of Bharatiya Jana Natya Sangh (IPTA) to Indore after its successful productions in Indore, Mumbai and Pune, a special program was organized in the honor of the artistes, technical associates and all the team members. On this occasion, all the colleagues were honored for their contribution by giving them certificates.
In this program organized at Abhinav Kala Samaj, Indore, President of State Press Club, Indore, Praveen Khariwal, while presenting certificates to the artists, said that such cultural presentations should continue. He said that Abhinav Kala Samaj is always open for artists. Getting a nationally respected platform like IPTA is a big achievement for young artists and such experiences remain in their memories throughout their life.
National Secretary of IPTA, Vineet Tiwari said that the objective of IPTA is not just to entertain but to create better human beings and better society through theatre. He said that the ideology of IPTA is based on scientific consciousness, rationality and human values and every artist and audience should become more sensitive and aware citizens through the experience of the drama.
He told that after the presentation of the play in Mumbai, renowned filmmaker Anand Patwardhan had said that reading and understanding history is also necessary because through it one develops the vision to understand the present.
He appreciated the research and presentation of the play. This play was appreciated from every point of view. He said that on May 25, 2026, 82 years of establishment of IPTA have been completed and the 83rd year has started. Recently, the birthdays of great people associated with IPTA like Khwaja Ahmed Abbas and Ritwik Ghatak have also passed. Names of many big artists are associated with IPTA. On one hand it is a matter of pride but on the other hand it is also a responsibility to continue its glorious history into a glorious present and a glorious future.
IPTA Indore Secretary Pramod Bagri said that he has been associated with this play from its conception to various presentations. With time and experience of staging, its script and art aspect have become stronger. He said that the contribution of personalities like Yusuf Mehar Ali and Ram Manohar Lohia in the 1942 movement should also be remembered in the play.
Senior litterateur Chunnilal Wadhwani said that in the present times IPTA needs to be continuously active and strengthen cultural intervention. Indore artist Hemant Kamal Chaurasia, who has worked in Mumbai IPTA, said that theatrical activities and presentations should be held regularly in Indore through IPTA.
Co-director of the play, Sarika Srivastava, while appreciating the artist colleagues, said that making a play is a collective process, which is not possible with the efforts of any one person. He said that the cooperation, dedication and collective labor of all the colleagues has made “Azadi ke Tarane” successful and the work will continue in the same spirit in future too.
During the program, friend Sharmistha presented folk songs. After this, the actors associated with the play Madhu Ved, Neeta Jain, Neepa Pandya, Raghavendra Tiwari, Nirmal Jain, Ujan Banerjee, Devraj Singh, Ishika Sharma and Geetanjali shared their experiences related to the preparations, travels and presentations of the play.
The play was conceptualized and researched by Jaya Mehta. The screenplay was written by Jaya Mehta and Vineet Tiwari. The direction was done by Gulrez Khan and Sarika Srivastava, while receiving special guidance from senior theater artist Flora Bose.
It is noteworthy that the first presentation of the play was held on 19 May 2026 in collaboration with Abhinav Kala Samaj in Indore, the second presentation was held on 23 May 2026 in Mumbai at the National Drama Festival organized by the national unit of IPTA and IPTA Mumbai and the third presentation was held on 24 May 2026 in a program organized by Shankar Brahme Samaj Vigyan Granthalaya in Pune. Last year this play was also performed in Delhi and was highly appreciated.
On this occasion, IPTA Indore President Ashok Dubey, Arvind Porwal, Abhay Nema, Anuradha Tiwari and Barkha Nema and many theater artists and cultural workers were present. The director of the play, Gulrez Khan could not attend due to the death of his father.
The program ended in a cordial atmosphere, where all the friends enjoyed the folk songs of Sharmistha along with sweets and hot bhajis and resolved to meet again soon and move ahead with new cultural programs.
