Took a big risk for the climax of ‘Gadar’, the director made his son sit on a moving train
New Delhi . ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’, included among the most successful films of Hindi cinema, is not only remembered for its story, dialogues and emotional scenes related to patriotism, but many interesting stories related to its production have also come to light from time to time. One such story is related to the climax scene of the film, about which director Anil Sharma made an important revelation years later. He had said that he had to face serious concerns about his son’s safety while trying to depict a scene in the film as close to reality as possible.
‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’, released in 2001, set a new example in Indian cinema. In the film, the character of Tara Singh played by Sunny Deol and Sakina played by Ameesha Patel became very popular among the audience. One of the most talked about features of the film was its climax, where Tara Singh tries to return from Pakistan to India with his family. A scene shot in this part later became one of the most memorable and challenging experiences for the director.
In the film, Tara Singh and Sakina’s son Charanjeet was played by Utkarsh Sharma, who is director Anil Sharma’s son in real life. At that time Utkarsh was very young. In a scene shot during the climax, Sunny Deol had to carry Utkarsh on his shoulders from one bogie to another on a moving train. It is said that the train was moving at real speed at that time and it was shot in real conditions to make the scene more impressive.
Anil Sharma had told in an interview that he was under extreme stress during the shooting of this scene. There was a constant worry in his mind that some unpleasant incident might happen. He admitted that he had closed his eyes several times during the shooting because the moment was extremely difficult for him as a father. According to him, this was one of the most challenging scenes of his entire career and even today he remembers that decision and thinks about the huge risk he had taken at that time.
The director had also said that he had full confidence in actor Sunny Deol, but despite this, as a parent, it was natural to be worried. The shooting was completed successfully and the scene became an important part of the film, but the experience affected him for a long time.
‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ achieved unprecedented success at the box office after its release. Made on a limited budget, the film earned record levels and remained popular among the audience for a long time. The dialogues, songs and characters of the film are still included in the discussions of Indian cinema. ‘Gadar 2’, released two decades later, also performed brilliantly and set new records at the box office and proved that the impact of Tara Singh’s story still remains in the hearts of the audience.
