Tamil Nadu Politics: Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Rajya Sabha bet’

Interesting equations are emerging regarding Rajya Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu politics. The Rajya Sabha by-election to be held on June 18, 2026 is being considered important amidst the current political system led by MK Stalin.

New Delhi: A major political development has come to light in the politics of Tamil Nadu, where the new political party TVK under the leadership of actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay has taken such a step regarding the Rajya Sabha seat, which has brought the political mathematics of the state into discussion afresh. According to sources, TVK has decided to give its potential seat to Congress in the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election, which is being seen as a strategy for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Rajya Sabha by-election becomes political center

There is intense political activity in Tamil Nadu regarding the Rajya Sabha by-election to be held on June 18, 2026. This seat has become vacant due to the resignation of the former MP, whose tenure was till 2028. TVK does not have enough influence in the assembly at present, but it was believed that the party could claim this seat on the basis of its cooperation. Despite this, the party has decided to give this seat to the Indian National Congress.

Coalition Politics and Equations

In the current political situation of Tamil Nadu, TVK government needs the support of various parties. The Congress has a limited but significant number of MLAs in the assembly, while the Left parties and other regional organizations are also part of the political equation. According to political analysts, Congress’s support forms an important basis of stability for the TVK government. For this reason, this decision is not being seen merely as “generosity” but as strategic alliance politics.

Big bet on Rajya Sabha seat for two years

This Rajya Sabha seat is for a tenure of two years only. That means, the tenure of the candidate who will get this seat will end in 2028. This is the reason why in political circles it is being seen as preparation for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. It is believed that TVK has taken this step to strengthen its relations with Congress in Delhi politics and to gain strategic advantage at the national level.

There are 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu, which is one of the largest political states in the country. Dravidian politics continued to dominate the state in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, but now the political equations seem to be changing rapidly. Political experts believe that the rise of TVK could pose a new challenge to the state’s traditional Dravidian parties—Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Change in vote share increases concern

According to recent political analyses, there has been a major change in vote share in Tamil Nadu. With the rise of TVK, the vote bank of traditional parties has been affected. In particular, the vote share of the Congress and its allies has seen a decline, while the TVK has recorded a strong performance. This change indicates a new power structure in the politics of the state.

Analysts believe that this decision is not limited to the Rajya Sabha seat only, but there is a long-term strategy behind it. On one hand, TVK has strengthened the alliance by giving seats to Congress, while on the other hand it has tried to strengthen its position in national politics.
