Su-57 Fighter Jet Deal: Why Russia wants India as a key partner in fifth-generation aircraft programme?

Saint Petersburg: Russia has expressed renewed willingness to expand defense cooperation with India in the field of advanced military aviation,with President Vladimir Putin indicating that Moscow is ready to collaborate on the Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft programme.

Putin Opens Door for Joint Fighter Jet Development

Speaking during an interaction with international news agencies in Saint Petersburg, Putin described the Su-57 as one of the most advanced fighter jets globally. He said Russia remains open to working with India on fifth-generation fighter technology and suggested that the aircraft could have been developed as a joint project.

The Russian President also noted that Moscow has no restrictions or limitations in cooperating with New Delhi on defense systems, including advanced air defense platforms.

Su-57 Positioned as Advanced Combat Aircraft

The Su-57 is Russia’s fifth-generation multirole stealth fighter designed for air superiority and strike missions. It is intended to compete with other advanced platforms globally, featuring modern avionics, stealth capabilities, and high manoeuvrability.

Russia has repeatedly pitched the aircraft as a potential option for India as the Indian Air Force continues to evaluate its long-term requirement for fifth-generation fighters.

India’s Earlier Exit From FGFA Project

India had earlier withdrawn from the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program in 2018. At the time, the Indian Air Force raised concerns over the aircraft’s stealth features, avionics systems, and overall performance, stating that it did not fully meet operational requirements.

Despite this, the discussions around possible renewed cooperation have resurfaced in recent years, with reports suggesting India may explore procurement or joint development options involving the Su-57.

Technology Sharing and Production Possibilities

Russian defense officials have indicated openness to extensive technology transfer, including sharing of source code and supporting indigenous production in India. Reports have suggested that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) could be involved in potential manufacturing if a deal progresses.

Officials from Russia’s defense sector have also highlighted long-standing defense ties with India, stating that cooperation continues across multiple platforms and remains strategically important for both countries.

Strategic Defense Partnership in Focus

The renewed dialogue around the Su-57 reflects broader efforts to strengthen India-Russia defense relations amid shifting global security dynamics. Both sides continue to explore ways to deepen cooperation in advanced military technologies.
