“Both countries see this visit as an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations,” Mao Ning, spokesman for the Xi Jinping administration, told a press conference. It is believed that Xi Jinping wants to send a message to Russia in this visit that China is still at the forefront of diplomatic relations with North Korea. China and North Korea are committed to each other through the agreement signed between the two countries 65 years ago. According to the treaty, one country is legally bound to provide military assistance if the other is attacked. China wants to rekindle that relationship.
Xi Jinping is now 72. The 70-year-old Chinese president has therefore started cutting back on foreign travel. The last time he visited abroad was last October. He met US President Donald Trump during his visit to South Korea.
Xi Jinping’s visit is believed to have far-reaching goals. At the moment there is military tension in the Middle East amid the Iran war.
