Buchi Babu addresses backlash over Janhvi Kapoor’s role in Peddi
Peddi director Buchi Babu Sana has addressed growing criticism over the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor in the film saying he did not expect the scenes to be received so negatively by audiences.
The Ram Charan-led film which also features Kapoor in a key role as Achiyyamma has come under fire on social media since its release for how her character is introduced and portrayed on screen.
Viewers have pointed to scenes they say objectify the character including shots focusing on her physical appearance and a controversial sequence in which Ram Charan’s character behaves in an aggressive and inappropriate manner.
Speaking in an interview Buchi Babu said the intention behind the scenes was to depict a playful romantic track between the lead characters but admitted the execution has not landed well with audiences.

“I had not anticipated that the scenes would be perceived so negatively by audiences,” the director said. He added that going forward the team would be “more careful” and ensure better representation in future storytelling decisions.
The criticism has also spread on social media where netizens have accused the makers of hyper-sexualising Kapoor’s character.
Some online posts analysing her role have gone viral with a section of users calling the portrayal problematic and insensitive.
Amid the ongoing debate Kapoor herself drew attention after reportedly engaging with online commentary about her performance further fuelling discussion around the film.
