IND vs AFG: Who is Manav Suthar, who made his Test debut for Team India?
The only Test between India and Afghanistan is being played in New Chandigarh from today (June 6). In this match, Indian captain Shubman Gill has won the toss and decided to bat first. Team India has handed the debut cap to young left arm spin all-rounder Manav Suthar. Suthar has got this big opportunity in the absence of senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. 23-year-old Suthar plays for Rajasthan in domestic cricket. He is considered a red-ball specialist since age group cricket.
Made Ranji debut at the age of 19
Born in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan, Manav Suthar made his Ranji debut at the age of 19. He made his first-class debut against Andhra at Thumba in February 2022, scoring a single. After this Suthar was dropped from Rajasthan’s playing XI. Suthar made a tremendous comeback in the 2022-23 Ranji season and took 39 wickets in just 6 matches. After this performance, he was given continuous opportunities in the India-A team. He has taken 17 wickets in 4 matches for India-A. Suthar made headlines by taking 7 wickets while making his debut in Duleep Trophy.
Have scored centuries in Ranji
Suthar, a useful lower-order batsman, scored his first Ranji century in January this year. Coming at number eight against Himachal Pradesh in Jaipur, he played a fighting inning of 120 runs in 330 balls. This innings of Suthar came at a time when Rajasthan team had lost 6 wickets for 104 runs in reply to Himachal Pradesh’s first innings score (406).

Suthar has so far taken 129 wickets in 29 first class matches. During this period he has taken 5 wickets 6 times. He also has 10 wicket hauls in his name thrice. His best performance in a first class match is 11 wickets for 62 runs. His best bowling figure in an innings is 8/33. While doing wonders with the bat in first class cricket, he has scored 945 runs at an average of 25.54. During this period he has scored 1 century and 6 half-centuries.
