“Very wrong”: R Ashwin on the selection of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to India’s T20I squad:
Read, Digital Desk : The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is all set to announce the Indian squad for their series against Ireland and England. While this would be announced, it has been heard that 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is in line to make his international debut.
In fact, Sooryavanshi is currently in the midst of excellent form, after a stellar season in the IPL. He has 776 runs under his belt in 16 innings and was the youngest player to have achieved this in an IPL tournament so far while guiding RR to qualifier 2 of the league. He won a whole plethora of individual awards as Rajasthan Royals reached the semi-finals.
Former India player Ravichandran Ashwin was then asked about the potential selection of Sooryavanshi straight into the Indian T20I team and what impact it would have. According to Ashwin, India’s top three batsmen would be quite scared of the youngster considering his red hot form.
“All this buzz all this time, it will probably put at least some of the three top batsmen on nervous legs. There has been this ruthlessness shown in the selections over the last five to six years, but I feel for team building that is very wrong. It is this buzz Vaibhav Suryavanshi that forces all the seniors to keep evolving to cement their places”, said Ashwin on his Youtube Channel.
The former India spinner also mentioned other stars not to be excluded to accommodate Suryavanshi
Additionally Ashwin has stated that the BCCI should not drop anyone who is in form from the side to include Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the Indian T20I team. According to him, the youngster should be told that he will get a look in when needed in the Indian team.
“Do not drop anyone who is in form from the Indian team because you want to get Vaibhav Suryavanshi into the Indian team. That should not be the only reason for a selection. Just as you said about the stability for Sai Sudarshan for the Test team, same will be for others as well. Tell him that you will not change the Indian team for you, but when needed in the Indian team, we will pick you,” stated Ashwin.
