Bharat Bhagya Vidhata Controversy : Controversy over the movie ‘Bharat Bhagya Vidhata’; Nurses unions demand deletion of offensive scenes
The upcoming film Bharat Bhagya Vidhata has been mired in controversy even before its release. Nurses associations across the country have expressed their displeasure, alleging that the film’s trailer depicts an alleged demeaning portrayal of the nursing profession. All India Government Nurses Federation and Maharashtra Government Nurses Federation have filed an official complaint with the Central Government, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and Maharashtra Government in this matter.

According to the organizations, nurses are a very important and sensitive component of the health system. Derogatory or misleading portrayals of nurses who contribute day in and day out to patient care can create a negative image in society. Therefore, organizations have taken a firm stand that such dialogues and views will not be accepted under any circumstances.
It has been claimed that some of the dialogues in the film’s trailer have hurt the sentiments of lakhs of nurses and their families across the country. In particular, some of the communications about nurses’ personal and social lives were offensive, the unions said. Therefore, it has been demanded that the film should be thoroughly screened before its release.
Indumati Thorat, president of Maharashtra Government Nurses Federation, while reacting in this regard, said that the trailer used derogatory words about nurses. “Who would marry a nurse?” He noted that such communication is not only insulting, but also creates a wrong view of the nursing profession. He also said that this kind of portrayal is shocking when there is a sense of respect for nurses in the society.
Against this backdrop, the organizations demanded a special screening for the nurse representatives before the release of the film. After that, the organizations were contacted by the office related to the film. Indumati Thorat informed that a special exhibition will be organized for the representatives of the organization on June 9. He also clarified that after this exhibition, the final position regarding the relevant scenes and dialogues in the film will be announced.

Instead of stopping by merely registering objections, the organizations have put forward some concrete demands. Their major demand is to immediately delete the offensive dialogues and scenes from the film, to listen to the role of nurses’ associations and to avoid portrayals that tarnish the image of the profession. Apart from this, there is also a demand to formulate clear guidelines to avoid wrong or derogatory portrayal of any business in future.
The organizations have warned that if the demands are ignored, they will launch a protest through democratic means and fight legally. There is a picture of nurses from all over the country coming together on this issue, and the film industry has also drawn attention to this issue along with the health sector.
Meanwhile, after the special screening on June 9, all eyes are on whether the controversy will calm down or intensify. The further decision is likely to be clarified after discussions between the filmmakers and the nurses association.
