Yashasvi Jaiswal Named as Virat Kohli’s Replacement for Afghanistan ODIs

The young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has been named as Virat Kohli’s replacement for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, which begins on June 13.

The chairman of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, has confirmed that the former Indian captain whas been ruled out of the ODI series due to a hamstring injury he sustained during the IPL 2026 finals.

While announcing the India squad for T20Is, Agarkar confirmed that Virat Kohli will be replaced by Yashasvi Jaiswal for the upcoming series against Afghanistan.

“Yashasvi will replace Virat,” said Ajit Agarkar. Having retired from T20Is and Tests, just plays ODIs for India. His last appearance for the Men in Blues came earlier when he played three ODIs against New Zealand.

He was the top scorer for the hosts with a haul of 240 runs at an average of 80 and a strike rate of 105.26.

He had an impressive form in the IPL 2026, scoring 675 runs at an average of 56.25 and a strike rate of 165.84, helping RCB to win the second title.

In the final, Virat Kohli returned unbeaten with 75 runs; however, he sustained a hamstring injury, and he has now been ruled out. However, the BCCI hasn’t provided a timeframe for Kohli’s recovery.

The BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also provided an update on Rohit Sharma, who also faced issues with his hamstring in the IPL 2026 season. The right-hand batter was named in the Afghanistan series, provided he gets a fitness clearance from the Centre of Excellence.

Speaking on Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma, Saikia said, “As far as Hardik Pandya and Rohit are concerned, Hardik is already at the CoE in Bengaluru. Very soon, he will go for the final test and will be in the process of getting the clearance certificate. As far as Rohit is concerned, he will also be visiting the CoE in the next two or three days. We are following a process for whoever gets injured; every player needs to get the certificate from our team at the CoE.”

India’s ODI assignment will be against Afghanistan on June 13 with the opener in Dharamsala, followed by the next two ODIs on June 17 and June 20 at Lucknow and Chennai.
