Ebola statistics light of hope in the Congo! The danger is not over, experts are warning
Ebola virus. Recently, the outbreak of this deadly virus in Africa has taken the whole world awake. But in this situation there was good news from Congo. It is claimed that once there were more than 1,000 symptoms, it has reduced to around 250. Naturally, a section of informed circles is quite happy with this statistic. But experts say, be careful not to be complacent. Why do they say that?
At the moment, 380 people are infected in Congo. 60 deaths are reported. Besides, 15 people are infected in the neighboring country Uganda. One death has been reported. It must be remembered that the authorities are no longer talking about the number of confirmed patients, not just ‘suspected’ as before. So while this reduction in the number of symptomatic cases is reassuring, it would be a mistake to think that Ebola has suddenly become less dangerous.
Worryingly, it is not possible to identify all people who have come into contact with an infected person. Roughly 45 percent have been identified so far. As a result, there is a strong fear of increasing the number of victims from the rest.
Needless to say, many patients who had fever but were actually suffering from some other disease like malaria were excluded from the list. Which is a common problem in the Congo. Worryingly, however, it is not possible to identify all those who have come into contact with an infected person. Roughly 45 percent have been identified so far. As a result, there is a strong fear of increasing the number of victims from the rest. All in all, the situation is still quite alarming.
It is good to say that although the infection is currently contained in the areas bordering Congo and Uganda, there is no way to take the situation lightly. This region of Africa has long been plagued by conflict, homelessness and poor health systems. Many infections remain undetected in environments of war and displacement. According to WHO, several confirmed and suspected infections and deaths have already been reported in Congo’s Ituri province. Separate infections have also been reported in the capital, Kampala, which have yet to be linked. The World Health Organization is also cautious in this situation.
