Vijayendra Prasad reveals Ramayana-inspired sequence in Rajamouli’s Varanasi

Hyderabad: Acclaimed screenwriter V Vijayendra Prasad has revealed a major detail about director S S Rajamouli‘s upcoming action-adventure film Varanasi, disclosing that the movie features a spectacular 30-minute sequence inspired by the epic Ramayana.

During a recent fan interaction, Vijayendra Prasad shed light on the much-discussed sequence that he had earlier described as one capable of leaving audiences spellbound.

Rama and Kumbhakarna battle to feature in film

When asked about the nature of the sequence, Vijayendra Prasad revealed that it centres on a dramatic battle between Lord Rama and Kumbhakarna.

“It’s a war between Rama and Kumbhakarna,” he said, offering the clearest indication yet of the mythological elements woven into the film’s narrative.

The revelation has sparked widespread speculation among fans regarding how the sequence fits into the larger storyline of Varanasi, which is being promoted as a globe-trotting action adventure.

Promotional visuals hinted at mythology

Referring to visuals already seen in promotional material, Vijayendra Prasad suggested that audiences had already received clues about the mythological portions of the film.

He pointed to scenes featuring Lord Rama, Kumbhakarna, Lord Hanuman’s tail and a chariot, describing the sequence as something that would leave viewers “spellbound”.

However, the veteran writer refrained from revealing further details about the plot.

Speculation over Prithviraj’s role

The latest comments have fuelled speculation that actor Prithviraj Sukumaran could portray Kumbhakarna in the mythological segments of the film.

While neither the filmmakers nor the actor have confirmed the character’s identity, fans have been actively discussing possible connections between the recently revealed details and the cast’s roles.

The makers have so far maintained secrecy around the storyline and character arcs.

Rajamouli earlier confirmed Mahesh Babu as Rama

Rajamouli had previously revealed that superstar Mahesh Babu would appear as Lord Rama in a portion of the film.

Speaking at an earlier event, the filmmaker recalled his reaction upon seeing Mahesh Babu in the character’s attire during a photoshoot.

Rajamouli said he was deeply impressed by the actor’s appearance, noting that while Mahesh Babu possesses the charm associated with Lord Krishna, he also embodies the calmness often attributed to Lord Rama.

The director revealed that he was so struck by the look that he briefly used the image as his phone wallpaper before removing it to avoid leaking details from the project.

Star-studded cast

The film features Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran in lead roles.

The ambitious production is being mounted on a grand scale and is expected to blend mythology, adventure and action elements.

Industry observers believe the film could become one of the biggest Indian cinematic releases in recent years due to the combination of Rajamouli’s direction and a star-studded cast.

Sankranti 2027 release expected

Although the makers have kept most details under wraps, Varanasi continues to generate significant anticipation among audiences.

The film is currently under production and is expected to arrive in theatres during the Sankranti 2027 festive season.

With Vijayendra Prasad’s latest revelation, excitement surrounding the project has grown further, particularly among fans eager to see how Rajamouli integrates mythological storytelling into a large-scale contemporary adventure.
