Suryakumar Yadav was stripped of captaincy and also out of the team, Ajit Agarkar told the reason; Know what was said
There has been a big change in the Indian T20 team announced for the tour of Ireland and England. Along with snatching the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, he has also been dropped from the team.
Why Suryakumar Yadav sacked as captain? The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on June 6 announced Team India’s squad for Ireland, England and Asian Games 2026. With this announcement, the speculations that had been going on for the last several days also came to an end. Captain Suryakumar Yadav, who won the T20 World Cup 2026, was not only removed from the captaincy, but he also did not get a place in the team.
Selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar also explained the reason behind this big decision in the press conference after the announcement of the squad. He made it clear that this decision was not easy, but keeping in mind the future of the team and the current circumstances, the selectors took this step. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new T20 captain.
Suryakumar Yadav’s poor form became the biggest reason
Ajit Agarkar told in the press conference that it was very difficult for the selectors to take a decision regarding Suryakumar Yadav. However, his recent form was the biggest reason for this decision. Surya has been struggling to score runs consistently for some time now and his performance in IPL 2026 also did not live up to expectations. In such a situation, the selectors decided to make changes in the team and dropped him from the captaincy as well as the squad.

Confidence expressed in Shreyas Iyer
Agarkar also revealed the decision to make Shreyas Iyer the new captain. He said that the selectors have watched Shreyas’s captaincy very closely in the last few years. He has successfully led various franchise teams and his individual performance as captain has also been excellent. According to Agarkar, Shreyas was a strong contender for the leadership role for a long time and hence he has been entrusted with this responsibility.
Decision taken keeping future plans in mind
The Chief Selector also made it clear that the selection committee is moving forward keeping in mind not just the current series but the plan for the next two years. The next T20 World Cup is to be played jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand in the year 2028. In such a situation, the selectors want to prepare the foundation of the team that will represent India in the future. Under this strategy, some big and tough decisions have been taken.
Beginning of a new era, Vaibhav Suryavanshi got a chance
With this new squad, a new era seems to be beginning in the Indian T20 team. Shreyas Iyer has been given the responsibility of captaincy and Tilak Verma has been given the responsibility of vice-captain. Whereas 15 year old young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been included in Team India for the first time. Vaibhav, who has performed brilliantly in IPL and Under-19 cricket, is being considered as the future of Indian cricket and his selection has created a new discussion in the cricket world.
