Who is the next mayor of Kolkata? After the resignation of Firhad Hakim, Mamata Banerjee called a big meeting today
Kolkata: After the resignation of senior Trinamool Congress leader Firhad Hakim from the post of Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), the stir in the politics of the city has intensified. Now the biggest question is who will be the next Mayor of Kolkata and whether the current Municipal Corporation Board will be able to complete its tenure.
Mamata Banerjee called an important meeting
To discuss this issue, Trinamool Congress supremo and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called an important meeting at 3 pm on Sunday. This meeting will be held at Trinamool Bhawan located at EM Bypass, in which party councilors and senior leaders have been instructed to attend. This meeting is being considered very important in political circles, because in it a final decision can be taken on the name of the new mayor.
Discussion on Shobhan Chatterjee’s name intensifies
The name of former mayor Shobhan Chatterjee is most discussed within the party. According to sources, Trinamool Congress is seriously considering his name. Although Shobhan Chatterjee is not a councilor at present, but according to the new rules any citizen of the city can become mayor. For this he will have to win the councilor election within six months.
However, a big challenge is that the tenure of the current Municipal Corporation Board is going to end in December. In such a situation, many political discussions have started regarding his possible return.
Crisis on Municipal Corporation Board too
After the resignation of Firhad Hakim, there is confusion regarding the functioning of the Municipal Corporation. The state government has sent a letter to the corporation asking why the existing board should not be dissolved. A reply has been sought from the corporation administration within three days.
Brainstorming on other names also
Some leaders of Trinamool Congress believe that this responsibility should be given to Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh or any experienced member of the Mayor Council. Brainstorming is going on within the party on this issue. This decision of Mamata Banerjee can have a big impact on the politics of Kolkata before the opposition India Alliance meeting to be held in Delhi.
