Surat: 4 workers including supervisor die due to suffocation while cleaning jewelery factory safety tank

Appearance: A major accident took place on Sunday morning near the Sugar Market in Varachha area. Here, four people who had come to clean the tank of the effluent treatment plant of a jewelery factory died of suffocation due to poisonous gas. The dead include a supervisor and three labourers. Initial investigation has revealed that no safety equipment was used during the cleaning.

The fire brigade received information about a person trapped in the tank at around 10:22 am. But when the team reached the spot and started the rescue operation, four people were found unconscious inside. After much effort, all four were taken out and immediately sent to Smear Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

Divisional Fire Officer Ranjitsingh Khadia said that this incident took place in an industrial unit named Rati Jewelers located in Khand Bazar. Here an ETP plant has been built for the waste material generated from gold and silver work, for the cleaning of which contractor workers were called. No concrete security arrangements were found at the spot. According to DCP Alok Kumar, the police have currently registered a case of accidental death. A detailed investigation is being conducted into safety protocol violations and negligence.
