Got check and mate from Praggnananda, CM Joseph Vijay gave a prize of Rs 50 lakh to the winner of Norway Chess Tournament 2026.

Chennai. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay honored Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa, the first Indian player to win the Norway chess tournament, with an award of Rs 50 lakh here on Monday. Praggnananda had won the title by defeating Germany’s Vincent Keimer in the final round in Oslo.

After honoring Pragyanananda, the Chief Minister also played a game of chess with the young grandmaster. Praggnananda described victory in the Norway Chess Championship as the biggest achievement of his career.

He said that defeating some of the world’s top players, including Magnus Carlsen, made this title especially memorable. This tournament was started in 2013 and before that no Indian player had been able to win it.
