India got the breakthrough early in the first session on the third day, when Omerzai pulled the ball onto his own stumps off the bowling of Prasidh. Rahmat Shah then put up some fight – he became the first Afghanistan batsman to score a Test fifty against India – and the injured Ashraf also held on despite considerable discomfort. But as soon as Suthar broke that partnership, Afghanistan’s innings quickly fell apart.

Left-arm spinner K Suthar performed brilliantly throughout and took 6 wickets for 33 runs in his first Test innings. With this, India got a lead of 412 runs in the first innings. Manav Suthar has become the 10th Indian (seventh among spinners) to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut. After Amit Mishra (5/71 against Australia in 2008), Suthar has become only the second Indian in this century to take a five-wicket haul in his first Test innings.
