First consignment of Assam’s famous GI tagged Tezpur litchi sent to Dubai
New Delhi . The first export consignment of Assam’s famous Tezpur litchi, which has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, has been sent to Dubai in collaboration with APEDA. With this initiative, farmers are expected to get better markets and better prices, while also strengthening the way for the agricultural products of North-East India to get global recognition.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has sent the first export consignment of GI-tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam to Dubai on June 7. This is a major achievement in expanding international market access for agricultural products of the North Eastern region. The ministry said the consignment of one metric tonne included Geographical Indication (GI) tagged Tezpur litchi, one of the most famous horticultural products of Assam. This litchi is famous for its exceptional sweetness, bright red colour, distinctive aroma and excellent taste. Several notable varieties are grown in the region, including Bombay, Bilati, Cardamom, Piyaji and Sahi, which are appreciated for their distinct taste and quality.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also said that Assam’s famous GI-tagged Tezpur litchi is now spreading its sweetness in foreign markets. He said that with the cooperation of APEDA, the first export consignment of Tezpur litchi left for Dubai. This step will give global recognition to litchi, farmers will get better prices and create new opportunities for agricultural products of North-East India.
