Internal discord increases in TMC, 19 rebel MPs demand to sit separately in Lok Sabha
The ongoing internal crisis in West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) appears to be deepening. Due to increasing disagreement within the party, 19 rebel MPs have given indications of organizational division by demanding separate sitting arrangements in the Lok Sabha. At the same time, continuous resignations from Rajya Sabha have further increased the concerns of the party leadership.
According to sources, on May 18, 19 MPs, including senior leaders Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Satabdi Roy, submitted their names to the Lok Sabha Speaker’s office demanding a separate seating arrangement. The names of Bapi Haldar, Dr. Sharmila Sarkar, Prasun Bandyopadhyay, Jagdish Barma Basunia, Asit Kumar Mal, Arup Chakraborty, Rachna Banerjee, Sayoni Ghosh, Khalilur Rehman, Abu Taher Khan, Yusuf Pathan, Mithali Bagh, Mala Roy, Kalipada Soren, Deepak Adhikari, June Maliya and Parth Bhowmik are also included in this list.
Rebel MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar confirmed that the group of 20 MPs has made a formal demand to sit separately in the Lok Sabha. This is being seen as a sign of a clear divide in the party’s parliamentary wing.
Following the weaker than expected performance in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, there are reports of increasing differences between senior party leaders and the central unit led by Mamata Banerjee. It is believed that this dissatisfaction has given rise to the current crisis.
Here TMC is also facing setbacks in Rajya Sabha. On Thursday, MP representing West Bengal Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from the Upper House. Earlier, on June 10, Sushmita Dev and on June 8, Sukhendu Shekhar Roy had also left Rajya Sabha membership. Sukhendu Shekhar Roy had also resigned from the primary membership of the party.
After the resignation, Prakash Chik Baraik said, “I have accepted the opinion of the people of West Bengal.”
Meanwhile, rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee dismissed speculations of any possible Congress merger. He clarified that the current developments are completely related to the internal affairs of the organization. Banerjee, who was recently recognized as the leader of the opposition by the West Bengal Assembly Speaker, claimed that her camp now has the support of 64 MLAs, while initially 58 MLAs had signed the letter of support. He said that the supporting MLAs will soon submit a formal letter to the Assembly Speaker.
At the same time, after the news of the meeting of rebel MPs with Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav and West Bengal BJP leaders, the discussion about possible political equations with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has intensified. However, no official merger has been confirmed yet.
If any kind of division or new political alliance emerges in the future, it will have to follow the provisions of the anti-defection law under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, according to which a two-thirds majority is required for any division to be recognized.
