GDP Growth Rate: Former Finance Minister of India Yashwant Sinha criticized that accurate analysis of the economy and proper policy making is impossible as the real economic status of the country and reliable statistics are not coming before the public. The economic data presented by the central government is misleading and the actual growth rate of the country (GDP) He claimed that it was only around 2.7 percent, not 7.7 percent.

He was speaking as a keynote speaker in a special seminar on ‘Today’s Indian Economy’ organized by the Pune City District Congress Committee. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan presided over the event. Questioning the credibility of the country’s economic data, Sinha said that in November 2025, the International Monetary Fund had given India a ‘C’ grade, expressing strong displeasure with India’s collection of economic data.

4 to 5 percent difference in figures

Claiming that there is a 4 to 5 per cent discrepancy between the actual situation and the government figures, he said policies based on wrong figures can never be effective. Reviewing the economic situation in the last 12 years, he said domestic savings and investment remained stable at around 33 percent of GDP. He mentioned that although the government is aiming to make India a developed nation by 2047, a minimum growth rate of at least 8 percent is required for that.
