US-Iran peace agreement sealed, what is going to change now?

US President Donald Trump and Iranian officials have confirmed that a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in West Asia has been signed. This is being considered a major diplomatic success after the war that has continued for more than three months. While leaving the Versailles Palace after the G7 summit held in France, Trump said that the agreement has been formally signed.

“It’s been signed. I signed it at Versailles,” Trump said. Iran also announced that the MoU has been finalized. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said that the agreement has officially come into force after both sides completed the digital signing process.

What did Iran say?

Speaking to state broadcaster IRIB, Bakai said, “It was decided that the Iran-US memorandum of understanding would be signed through digital medium. Now after the signatures of both parties, this agreement has been officially finalized.”

After this announcement, there is no need for the formal signing ceremony proposed in Geneva, Switzerland on Friday. However, according to Iranian officials, the talks in Switzerland will continue as scheduled. According to Iranian state news agency IRNA, Bakai said that the agreement has now entered its implementation phase.

What is the name of this agreement?

The official name of this agreement is “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran”. Trump had announced this on Sunday. Its aim is to end the nearly 110-day conflict, which began after the US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.

What will happen now after the agreement?

  • According to information released earlier by American officials, this agreement provides for an immediate and permanent halt to military operations on all fronts. Military operations related to Lebanon have also been included in this.
  • Under the agreement, America has agreed to remove the naval blockade imposed on Iran within 30 days. After this, the movement of commercial ships is expected to gradually return to pre-war levels.
  • The document also states that the US military will withdraw its presence from areas around Iran within 30 days of the final comprehensive agreement.
  • At the same time, Iran has promised to ensure safe movement of commercial ships and not to charge any kind of transit fee for 60 days.
  • In this MoU, a framework for future negotiations has also been decided. Under this, both the countries have been given 60 days time to negotiate the terms of the comprehensive and final agreement.

Iran said – America’s failure

Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf called the deal proof of “America’s failure” and said talks with Washington would continue. “People will see it and judge for themselves,” Ghalibaf said in an interview with Iranian state television.

He said that the Strait of Hormuz remained a major issue during the negotiations and provisions related to this strategic sea route have been included in the agreement. “The payment of service charges for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz has been formally included in the MoU,” Ghalibaf said.
