The Board of Control for Cricket in India is seriously considering starting the upcoming season a little earlier than scheduled. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia, in an exclusive interview to PTI, has revealed that the board is planning for future IPL seasons keeping in mind the window between March 10 and May 15.
When will IPL 2027 start?
The IPL 2027 season can start from March 10. Whereas the final of the tournament can be played on May 15. This proposal to start the 20th season of the IPL early comes amid growing concerns over weather conditions at the end of May and the challenge of fitting the busy calendar of international cricket between the two months of the IPL.

What did BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia say?
BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia said in an interview to PTI that IPL 2026 started around March 28 or 29 and the final of this season was played on May 31. We are just considering that there is a possibility of rain in the last days of the tournament or the start of the pre-monsoon season. On the other hand, there is also summer season, which is not very good for the players and spectators.
Taking his point forward, Saikia said that the main concern of BCCI is to create a better environment for playing and watching matches, especially in those areas where the temperature becomes very high in the second half of the IPL season. Further, the BCCI Secretary said that there is a discussion going on in the IPL Governing Council whether the IPL can be started about two weeks earlier without disrupting other cricket related programs.
How many matches will be played?
The BCCI Secretary talked about changes in the IPL schedule, but along with this he made it clear that due to the busy schedule and restrictions of international cricket, there will be no increase in the number of IPL matches. Only 74 matches will be played in IPL 2027. At present there are no plans to increase the number of matches to 94.
