Telegram Ban: Will Telegram be closed forever in India? Government revealed those dreadful secrets in Delhi High Court
The suspense has deepened regarding the temporary ban imposed on the Telegram app by the Government of India just before the country’s biggest medical entrance examination NEET-UG 2026. Telegram company immediately reached Delhi High Court against this ban, after which the court room has now become an arena of legal battle. The Central Government has made foolproof preparations to completely corner Telegram in the Delhi High Court and has made it clear that there will be no compromise with the country’s security.
The biggest and most direct claim of the government is that Telegram is not at all serious about India’s security, sovereignty and personal data sharing of common citizens. The government has filed a very shocking affidavit in the court, in which such revelations have been made which will shock anyone. The government says that apart from spreading child pornography and illegal content, Telegram is now becoming the new ‘dark web’ for vicious criminals, where it is being used indiscriminately to evade the laws of the country. After these serious allegations, the discussion has intensified across the country whether Telegram will be banned forever in India? At present, the Delhi High Court has reserved its decision in this high-profile case after a long debate.
The vacation bench led by Justice Tejas Karia heard this sensitive case. The country’s veteran and senior lawyer Dhruv Mehta took charge on behalf of Telegram in the court, while Attorney General R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta themselves entered the fray to present the central government’s side. After hearing the heated arguments from both the sides, the honorable judge reserved his order. However, considering the seriousness of the matter, the court has ordered both the parties to submit their written submissions and necessary rules and regulations to the court by 7 pm.
No action was taken overnight, horoscope was being prepared since May
During this vigorous hearing held on Wednesday, the Central Government strongly defended the ban imposed on Telegram. Presenting the arguments on behalf of the government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta clearly told the High Court that such a major action against Telegram has not been taken suddenly or overnight. The government was continuously discussing this sensitive issue with Telegram management since last May, because since May the government had a pile of complaints against this app.
Tushar Mehta also made a big claim before the court that the government has such shocking evidence and concrete figures of the flourishing of anti-national and criminal activities through this app, seeing that this app cannot be exempted even for a moment. He said that keeping in mind the security of the country, the government has taken this step by using its emergency powers under Section 69A of the IT Act.
Telegram’s clarification: Government’s decision arbitrary and excessively strict
On the other hand, the Telegram company, shocked by these serious allegations against itself and the sudden ban, has termed the government’s decision as completely arbitrary and excessively harsh. Telegram’s senior lawyer Dhruv Mehta argued in the courtroom that his company has always followed the guidelines of the Government of India and has immediately blocked suspicious channels as advised by security officials from time to time. Telegram argues that such a sudden temporary ban is causing huge trouble to crores of common and innocent users of the country who use it properly. According to the company, this ban is like a ‘blanket ban’ i.e. imposing a complete ban, which is not justified.
Government enumerates Telegram’s 4 biggest sins in court
The allegations made by the Central Government against Telegram in its confidential affidavit submitted to the Delhi High Court are very frightening. According to the government, Telegram channels are being used extensively to spread heinous crimes like child pornography in the society, which has become a headache for our security agencies these days.
Apart from this, citing the official data of the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP), the government told the court that there has been a sudden flood in the cases of cyber fraud through Telegram in India. Criminals are committing financial scams worth crores of rupees by creating fake and fake identities on this platform and the personal data of common Indians stolen by hackers is being openly sold here at high prices.
The government has also expressed deep concern over the fact that extremely private data of Indian citizens, such as their active mobile numbers and other sensitive information, is being leaked in a jiffy through dangerous automated ‘bots’ present on Telegram. The biggest thing is that from indiscriminately circulating the leaked papers of the country’s biggest and prestigious examinations like NEET, Telegram is also being used as a weapon by the dreaded international terrorist organizations to incite violence in the country and spread false rumours. Now it remains to be seen what final verdict the court gives on the fate of Telegram after the arguments at 7 pm.
