Indian Railways: Green light for 172 crore railway project; The stress on Panvel Junction will reduce

Indian Railways | Indian Railways has taken an important decision in order to make rail transport faster and more efficient in Maharashtra. Railways have given green light to construct a new cord line of 3.7 km length between Somtane-Chikhali under Central Railway. 172 crores have been sanctioned for this project. This project will help reduce the increasing stress at Panvel Junction and will also speed up the movement of goods.

Currently, Panvel Junction is an important link for rail traffic on the Karjat and Roha lines. However, as there is no direct rail connectivity between these two routes, many trains have to take a detour via Panvel. This not only consumes a lot of time, but also increases the congestion at the junction. The new cord line will remove this bottleneck and provide direct connectivity between Karjat and Roha lines. Panvel is considered to be one of the busiest railway junctions in the Mumbai region. It handles rail traffic in four major directions namely Roha, Karjat, Diva and JNPT. Therefore, the new connection will improve the train movement at the junction and increase the traffic capacity.

The biggest benefit of this project is going to be the freight sector. Freight trains connected to JNPA and JNPT, which handle about 60 percent of the country’s container traffic, will no longer need to go to Panvel or change engine direction. As a result, the logistics system will be more efficient by reducing the time of transportation of goods.

According to the railway administration’s estimate, the project will save about 110 minutes of time for each freight train. This will lead to faster movement of goods, lower costs and increased efficiency. Indian Railways

It is estimated that an additional nine million tonnes of freight capacity will be available every year after the new cord line is commissioned. It will also complement the already approved elevated cord line projects on JNPT-Karjat and JNPT-Roha routes.
