Mobile Data Consumption In India: There was a time when mobile data was limited only to using social media or sending messages, but today the picture has completely changed. In which users’ video streaming, online gaming, artificial intelligence apps and high-speed 5G networks have taken internet consumption to new heights. Latest reports regarding this show that Indians have now become among the people who use the most mobile data in the world. The reason for this is cheap data plans and affordable smartphones which make the Internet an important part of the everyday life of people of every class.

Data consumption reached 31 to 36 GB every month

Nokia’s 2025 Mobile Broadband Index report states that on an average a mobile user in India is using more than 31GB of data every month. Whereas in Ericsson Mobility Report this figure has been revealed to be around 36GB per month. In such a situation, if we look at this figure on a daily basis, on an average an Indian spends more than 1GB of data every day.

In which people use video streaming, social media and online gaming more. Interestingly, India’s data consumption is more than many developed countries like America, Europe and China.

Why is internet consumption increasing?

Experts on such matter feel that AI based apps, 4K video streaming, cloud gaming and short video platforms are one of the biggest reasons for increasing data consumption. Considering today’s times, most people watch high-quality videos on their smartphones and watch online content for hours. Nokia’s report also shows that India’s total mobile data traffic would reach more than 27 exabytes per month by 2025. At the same time, 5G data traffic has increased by 70 percent on an annual basis to 12.9 exabytes per month.

5G changed the face of the internet

It is also being said in the information that the rapid expansion of 5G network in India has also become a major reason for the increase in data consumption. In which reports have also come out that 58 percent of the total mobile data traffic in metro cities has now come on 5G network. At the same time, during 2025, there were 892 million active 4G devices in the country, out of which more than 383 million supported 5G. Not only this, more than 90 percent of the smartphones sold in a year are coming with 5G support. It is clear from this that India’s data consumption may increase rapidly in the coming years.
