Abhishek Banerjee told Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla that MPs cannot merge with any other party on their own, because of this they should be disqualified. Kalyan Banerjee, Mahua Moitra were also among those who met the speaker along with Abhishek. Abhishek Banerjee told the speaker that single MPs cannot merge with any other party.

He said that, 20 people first met the speaker and demanded recognition as a separate group. Later it was revealed that he had joined a group called NCPI. Banerjee claimed that no one has heard the name of this group till date. Even these rebel MPs did not know anything about this party earlier. The TMC leader cited the 10th Schedule of the Constitution.

The TMC leader said that the anti-defection law is very clear. If a member voluntarily leaves his party membership, he is no longer eligible to be an MP. Abhishek Banerjee further said that these people had won the elections on the symbol of TMC. Now, two years after the elections, he is claiming that he is joining a new party. In such a situation, his Lok Sabha membership should end immediately.
