Mitchell Robinson, Landry Shamet and More: Knicks’ Biggest Offseason Questions
Fresh off their first NBA championship in more than five decades, the New York Knicks enter the offseason with most of their star core under contract. However, several important role players are headed toward free agency, creating difficult roster and financial decisions for the front office.
Mitchell Robinson Is the Top Priority
The biggest decision revolves around center Mitchell Robinson, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent. Robinson remains one of the league’s best offensive rebounders and rim protectors, and multiple reports indicate that retaining him is New York’s primary objective this summer.
The challenge is financial. Re-signing Robinson could push the Knicks closer to, or beyond, the NBA’s restrictive luxury-tax aprons, limiting future roster flexibility. His injury history also complicates negotiations.
Landry Shamet Could Price Himself Out
Guard Landry Shamet significantly boosted his value during the Knicks’ playoff run. After playing on a team-friendly contract, Shamet is expected to attract interest from multiple teams looking for shooting and playoff experience.
New York would like to keep him, but matching outside offers may become difficult given the club’s cap situation.
Jose Alvarado’s Situation Bears Watching
Backup point guard Jose Alvarado holds a player option and is reportedly seeking a larger long-term contract. His energetic defense and leadership made him a valuable piece of the championship roster, but the Knicks may struggle to meet his market value if other teams present lucrative offers.
Other Free Agents
Additional decisions await on players such as Jordan Clarkson, Jeremy Sochan, and several younger restricted free agents, including Mohamed Diawara and Ariel Hukporti. The Knicks would prefer to maintain their depth, but retaining everyone may not be financially realistic.
Salary Cap Reality
The good news for New York is that its championship core—Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart—remains under contract. The challenge is filling out the rest of the roster without crossing expensive tax thresholds that could restrict future trades and signings.
Outlook
The Knicks are not expected to be major players in external free agency. Instead, their offseason will likely focus on keeping as much of their championship rotation together as possible. Robinson’s contract situation, Shamet’s market value and Alvarado’s future could ultimately determine how much continuity New York carries into its title defense next season.
