Varanasi, June 19. A massive fire suddenly broke out at a CNG pump on Friday near Karkhianv village under Phulpur police station on Varanasi-Jaunpur highway in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh. The horrific flames were clearly visible more than 40 feet high in the sky.

According to the information received, this accident happened when CNG gas was being refilled in a vehicle at the pump. Within no time, the fire took such a huge form, due to which there was a stampede in the pump premises and the employees ran outside to save their lives.

Considering the sensitivity of the accident, DCP Gomti Neetu Kadyan, SDM Pindra Pratibha Mishra and Naib Tehsildar Radheshyam Yadav reached the spot with heavy police force and fire brigade team.

emergency stop button pressedbut the fire broke out due to the pressure of gas in the pipes

Eyewitnesses said that as soon as the fire broke out, the pump employees showed indomitable courage and wisdom. He immediately pressed the ‘Emergency Stop Button’ and completely blocked the gas supply from the main storage tank and compressor. After this the employees raised the alarm and started shouting to close the ‘manual master shut-off valve’.

After much effort, the master shut-off valve was closed, but by then the small CNG pipe and the cylinders installed there had caught fire. Due to the high pressure of gas in the pipes, the flames became increasingly fierce, due to which the wheels of vehicles passing through the highway stopped.

busy cooling the cylinders More than 12 fire engines, fear of blast

The nature of CNG fire is such that pouring water directly on it has very little effect. Even after the gas supply was cut-off, the main CNG cylinders had become extremely hot. In such a situation, to prevent the possibility of any ‘high-pressure blast’ (cylinder burst), more than 12 vehicles of the fire brigade were continuously busy cooling the cylinders by pouring strong jets of water on them. Till the last information was received, additional fire tenders from other centers of the city were continuously reaching the spot with water.

200 meter radius was completely evacuated

To avoid any major loss of life or property, the administration completely evacuated the entire area of about 200 meters around the CNG pump. All the vehicles parked at the pump and the employees present there were sent to a safe distance. The police did not allow anyone to stand on the boundary, main road or even in the surrounding fields.
