Big action by Central Government, these 16 medicines kept in your house are banned immediately, see the complete list

Keeping in mind the health and safety of the patients in the country, the Central Government has taken a very big and tough decision. The government has completely banned the manufacture, sale and distribution in the market of 16 fixed dose combination (FDC) medicines with immediate effect. The medicines which have been hit with this tough crackdown include commonly used antibiotics, stomach ache medicines, diabetes medicines and some cosmetic and skin products.

The government has taken this major and prompt action using the powers given under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. According to information received from officials, a detailed review meeting of the government’s expert committee, Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) and its sub-committee, found that these drug combinations have no solid medical basis. Along with this, there is not enough scientific evidence available to prove the benefits of these medicines for the human body.

Intensive review process of medicines was going on since 2021

The process of closely examining these suspected medicines is not new today, but it started in the year 2021 itself. During this long period, various scientific studies and medical data available in the market were analyzed in great depth. Under this process, drug manufacturing companies and other concerned parties were also given full opportunity to present their case before the government, but the expert committee was not at all satisfied with the arguments and arguments given by the companies. Subsequently, in December 2024, the sub-committee had made a strong recommendation to completely ban all these 16 drug combinations in the national interest, which has now been implemented.

Most questions raised on combination of antibiotics

The largest portion of the medicines included in this banned list are antibiotic combinations, on which experts have raised the most serious questions. The banned drugs mainly include heavy antibiotic combinations like Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase, Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase + Lactobacillus Sporogenes, Cefuroxime + Serratiopeptidase and Cefadroxyl + Probenecid. Medical experts clearly say that no clear and concrete medical benefit was found in mixing different elements together in these medicines and giving them to the patients, rather it could be harmful to health.

Some medicines for common stomach ache and diabetes are also included in the list.

Apart from antibiotics, the government has also completely banned medicines commonly given for stomach ache and cramps like Dicyclomine + Paracetamol + Clidinium Bromide. Along with this, a famous diabetes drug combination named Gliclazide + Chromium Picolinate has also been banned with immediate effect. Experts have clarified in their report that the use of ‘Chromium Picolinate’ in the treatment of diabetes worldwide is not recommended in any standard medical guideline or standard protocol.

Government puts maximum emphasis on the safety and health of patients

The stand of the Central Government regarding this big decision is very clear. The government believes that any medicine in the country should be used only on solid scientific basis and as per actual medical need. Any combination that does not provide any additional benefit to patients’ disease and may increase potential health risks to them cannot be allowed to remain in the Indian market. In the medical world, this strict decision of the government is being considered as a very important and historic step towards the safe, correct and rational use of medicines.
