Precautions in Skin Care: What Not to Do
Be careful in skin care
In their quest to get glowing and healthy skin, people often buy products recommended on social media or try various home remedies. But there are some things which should be avoided on the face. While these may provide immediate benefits, they can cause long-term damage to your skin.
Toothpaste is made only for teeth, not for skin. So, the next time someone recommends it for skincare, don’t try it. It can upset the pH balance of your skin and contains ingredients that can dry out the skin.
It is recommended on social media to use baking soda to remove dark spots, but it strips the skin of moisture, which can make the skin extremely dry and lifeless. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is highly alkaline, which can cause rashes, irritation and itching.
Apple cider vinegar is also highly acidic. Applying it directly on the skin can cause a chemical burn, causing irritation and removing the skin’s natural moisture. If you want to apply it on the face, always dilute it by mixing it with water and do a patch test first.
Homemade sugar or coffee scrubs are promoted on social media. Although these may be beneficial for hands and feet, they are too harsh for the face. Coffee and sugar granules are rough and can cause rubbing or scratching on the skin.
Lemon juice has been used in skincare for a long time. Although it is rich in Vitamin C, do not make the mistake of applying it directly on the skin. Its acidic nature makes it extremely harsh on the skin.
