Donald Trump’s big statement on G7 photo controversy, says ‘Melonie wants to be friends again’
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has once again spoken about the G7 dispute with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Trump says that during the G7 summit held in France, Meloni had asked him to take a photo with him.
Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday that Meloni had begged him for a selfie. He also said that Meloni’s popularity in Italy is falling because of not supporting America on the Iran issue.
Expressed displeasure over not being allowed to use the runway
Trump alleged that during the Iran war, Meloni had refused to allow the US to use Italy’s landing strips and runways. According to him, this decision caused a lot of logistical problems in the American military operation.
Trump wrote that America spends billions of dollars every year on the security of Italy and other NATO allies, but Italy did not cooperate in its time of need. She said that now that America has defeated Iran militarily, Meloni wants to make friends again to increase her popularity.
Meloni told fabricated claim
Meloni completely rejected Trump’s claim on Friday. He said that Trump’s words are fabricated and neither he nor Italy ever pleads with anyone.
The Italian Prime Minister expressed disappointment and said that it is not right to fabricate such stories. He says that he did not make any request for photos from Trump during the G7 summit.
Both the leaders were once considered close
This controversy started when Trump, while talking to Italian TV channel La7, said that Meloni was very eager to get photographed with him during the G7 summit. Trump also said that Meloni was probably happy that he spoke to him at the summit.
Meloni was once considered Trump’s biggest supporter in Europe. She was the only European leader to attend Trump’s inauguration in 2025. But in recent times their relationship has turned sour.
Meloni recently publicly criticized Trump after he attacked Pope Leo for condemning the Iran conflict. After this, Trump accused Meloni of lacking courage. Now these statements and counter-allegations seem to be increasing the distance between the two leaders.
