To implement this new system, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has developed the ‘Abhigyan’ app, which was launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The app will be linked to the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS), which stores fingerprints of accused, convicts and prisoners on a central platform.
Inspection is possible on the road itself
With this app, police will be able to biometrically scan suspects while they are on the road, making it easier to nab wanted criminals. This will enable the police and security agencies to retrieve the suspect’s old records within seconds. A demo of this app shows that fingerprints are matched to the database in just 35 seconds. Modernization of Police
While unveiling the Abhigyan app, Shah said that it is important not only to catch the criminals, but also to punish them within a certain time frame. For this he emphasized the need to use technology. He said that scientific presentation of evidence such as fingerprints, DNA, mobile tower data, facial recognition and iris scans in charge sheets could help convicts get harsher punishments.

Real-time recognition on smartphones
According to the report, fingerprint verification is currently available only at 1,556 workstations installed in police stations and district headquarters across the country. Currently a person needs to be brought to a police station for fingerprint matching. However, with the Abhigyan app, police and security agencies can now search for criminal records directly on their phones. This app will be secured with two-step authentication and will provide results in real time. The National Automated Fingerprint Identification System database includes 9.91 lakh drug traffickers, 3.65 lakh human trafficking cases and a large prison database.
