Crisis deepens at Yamuna Bazaar Ghat: 300 houses vacant, doubt on future of more than 50 temples

A big crisis has arisen for the people living in Yamuna Bazaar Ghat area located at Kashmiri Gate. Following the notice issued by Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), residents here have started vacating their homes. Being situated on the banks of Yamuna, this area falls in ‘O’ zone and has been declared an illegal settlement by the administration. In such a situation, the action to remove encroachment can start any time this week.

No relief received from High Court

Last month, the administration had given notice to more than 300 families to vacate their houses, the deadline for which had expired earlier this month. The affected families also approached the Delhi High Court for relief, but they did not get any relief. After the administration expressed the possibility of action, people themselves started removing goods from their homes.

Moving towards Wazirabad, Geeta Colony and Kailash Nagar

Panda families, fishermen, barber community people and tenants who have been living at Yamuna Bazaar Ghat for years are now relocating to areas like Wazirabad, Geeta Colony and Kailash Nagar. According to local resident Rakesh Sharma, the entire area will be almost empty in the next one or two days.

There is confusion regarding temples

However, the biggest question is about the future of more than 50 temples present here. It has not yet been made clear whether the temples will also be removed during the encroachment removal action or they will be kept in place. If the temples remain intact, then how their regular worship, worship and religious activities will be conducted also remains a matter of concern. This may also affect the devotees coming from other states including Delhi every day.

Action can start from ghat number-2

According to local people, demolition action will not be easy due to the geographical location of the area. Due to Yamuna Ghat on one side, high wall on the other side and Nigambodh Ghat nearby, there are limited ways for bulldozers to enter. In such a situation, there is a possibility that action should be initiated from Ghat No. 2. First, a road will be made by removing the settlements on the river banks, after which further action will be carried out.
