Political turmoil in Spain, ban on Prime Minister’s wife from going abroad
Desk: Orders have been issued to surrender the passport of Begona Gomez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The court has also directed to attend the court every two weeks. The court has ordered him to face trial on charges of corruption and abuse of influence.
The investigating judge says that Gomez is suspected of leaving the country. Therefore, conditions have been imposed for submitting the passport. However, the date of the trial has not been decided yet. Gomez is accused of using his influence to help some technology companies get government contracts.
He is also accused of misuse of public funds and misuse of software while being a professor in the university. Gomez has denied all the allegations. Whereas Prime Minister Sanchez says that this matter is a campaign being run by political opponents to defame his government and remove him from power.
A businessman and a consultant working for Gomez will also be prosecuted in this case. After the court’s decision, the political controversy in Spain has increased further. Opposition parties are demanding resignation from the government and early elections. The ruling Socialist Party criticized the verdict, saying Gomez was innocent. He is being targeted for political reasons for the last two years.
On the other hand, the main opposition People’s Party has accused the government of putting pressure on the judiciary and media. The opposition says that the biggest threat to democracy is coming from the government itself. The investigation against Gomez began about two years ago after a complaint by a group called ‘Clean Hands’. The matter is still in the court and the final decision is yet to come.
