India’s first defeat in Women’s T20 World Cup, South Africa defeated by 6 wickets

Manchester. The Indian team suffered its first defeat in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. In the match played in Manchester, South Africa performed brilliantly and registered an important victory by defeating India by six wickets. South Africa’s experienced all-rounder Marizanne Cap played a decisive role in her team’s victory by performing brilliantly with both ball and bat.

After winning the toss and coming to bat first, the Indian team made an aggressive start. Shafali Verma batted fast and maintained the run pace in the initial overs, while Smriti Mandhana also made useful contributions. India took advantage of the fast start in the powerplay, but after this the team could not score a big score due to the fall of wickets at regular intervals.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Deepti Sharma and other batsmen played useful innings in the middle order, helping India reach 158 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. South Africa’s bowlers displayed a disciplined performance and did not give the Indian batsmen the opportunity to play freely.

The South African team, which came to chase the target, had a slow start and the Indian bowlers put pressure in the initial overs. Indian spinners provided initial successes and put the team in a strong position in the match.

However, after this, Marijan Kapp and Tajmin Britts presented a great mix of restrained and aggressive batting. An important partnership between the two players brought South Africa back into the match. Cap batted fast in the final overs to end India’s hopes of victory.

The Indian team also got opportunities to dismiss Cap in the middle overs, but the team had to suffer the consequences of missing some catches. In the last two overs, South Africa needed relatively less runs to win and Cap batted aggressively to lead his team to victory.

Marijan Cap performed all-round and also took important wickets in bowling and played an unbeaten half-century in batting. He was named Player of the Match for his excellent performance.

Despite this defeat, the Indian team remains in a strong position in the points table. Now the team’s eyes will be on the next match, where victory can put it in a stronger position in the race for the semi-finals.
