How did the shape of Rolls Royce’s front grill become their brand identity? How did Greek temple architecture become a ‘status symbol’?
When you see any expensive or luxury car coming from the front, the first thing that catches your attention is its ‘Grill’. In the early days, the car grill was a simple technical means designed only to keep the engine cool, i.e. to let air into the radiator. But, global brands like Rolls Royce transformed this simple element into a masterpiece, which today has become the biggest symbol of their empire and wealth.
Influence and History of Greek Architecture
This famous grill of Rolls Royce is known as ‘Parthenon Grill’. When the company began building its cars around 1904, the car’s designers were inspired by Greek architecture. The vertical bars of this grill were modeled after the magnificent columns of the famous ‘Parthenon’ temple in Athens. The grille looks very grand, regal and stable, which perfectly matches the brand values of Rolls-Royce.

A wonderful example of human ingenuity
You may be surprised to know that this Rolls Royce grill is not made by machine. Even today, each grill is completely handmade by skilled craftsmen. No measuring tapes or precision tools are used to make these grills, instead the artisans design the vertical bars with only their eye and experience skills. It takes an artisan more than a day to make this grill. The grill is also signed by the craftsman when it is finished.

An existence that has persisted even in modern times
Today’s modern cars have undergone major changes in engine design, and electric cars of the future may not even technically need a grill. Still, Rolls-Royce hasn’t given up on its grill design. They have also retained this grille in a digital and more aerodynamic form in their Spectre electric car.
In short, the grille which was once made only to cool the engine, has today become such a symbol of craftsmanship and prestige that one can easily recognize a Rolls Royce car anywhere in the world just by looking at that grille!
