Qatar gas plant explosion: 13 killed, including Indians; Embassy issued helpline numbers

New Delhi: At least 13 people were killed and 66 injured in a massive explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan LNG complex on Sunday. Indian and Pakistani workers are also among the dead. The incident occurred as efforts were being made to restart operations at the facility that had been halted following the Iranian attack.

Death of Indian and Pakistani workers

Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi confirmed on Monday that 13 people had died in the accident. He said that today I have to make an announcement which was never expected. 13 people with Indian and Pakistani citizenship have died tragically. The condition of many of the 66 injured people is said to be critical. The blast occurred as workers were resuming work at the Strategic Energy Centre.

Indian Embassy started helpline

The Indian Embassy in Doha has immediately activated the emergency helpline after the accident. The embassy said it was deeply concerned over the incident in Ras Laffan Industrial City. Many people have been injured and some are reported missing.

The Mission has assured all possible help to the affected Indian citizens and their families. The embassy said that we stand with the government and people of Qatar in this difficult time. Wishing speedy recovery of the injured and praying for the safety of the missing. The Embassy has also issued helpline numbers for assistance.

Accident occurred at Barzan gas facility

The explosion occurred at the Barzan gas supply facility in the Ras Laffan industrial area. According to QatarEnergy, the accident occurred during the restart of the facility which had been shut down for months. Officials initially said the damage was limited, but the Interior Ministry later reported higher casualties. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation.

The plant is important for the country’s energy supply

The Barzan facility is a vital part of Qatar’s domestic energy system. It produces about 1.4 billion cubic feet of gas daily, which is used in power and water purification plants. ExxonMobil also has a stake in this facility in Qatar. Work here was halted after the Iranian missile attack in March.

The global energy market is eyeing this plant in Qatar, one of the world’s largest LNG exporters. Any prolonged disruption could impact international gas supplies.

Currently, relief teams are working on the spot and the damage is being assessed. Officials say that all possible help will be provided to the affected families.
