Big change in British politics, Keir Starmer resigns from the post of Prime Minister
Britain Political Crisis: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned from his post on Monday amid growing resentment within the Labor Party and continuing political challenges. His resignation ended the chapter of another short-lived government in Downing Street. In recent years in British politics, there has been a trend of short tenures in the post of Prime Minister, in which now Starmer’s name has also been added.
King was informed about the decision
In a statement issued by Downing Street, Keir Starmer said that he has informed the King of his decision to resign. He also made it clear that he will continue to hold the responsibility of his post till the selection of the new Prime Minister, so that the process of transfer of power can be completed smoothly.
Pressure for change of leadership was increasing within the party
There was speculation about Starmer’s resignation for the last several weeks. Political shocks, declining popularity among the public and calls for a change in leadership within the Labor Party weakened his position.
In the 2024 general election, the Labor Party, under the leadership of Starmer, registered a major victory and ended the 14-year-long rule of the Conservative Party. Initially his government received widespread support, but later economic troubles, the state of public services and growing differences within the party created difficulties for the government.
Took over as Prime Minister in July 2024
61-year-old Keir Starmer became the 58th Prime Minister of Britain in July 2024. After winning the elections, he had promised to bring change in the country and give better results to the people. He had also praised the tenure of his predecessor Rishi Sunak and praised his leadership.
However, due to the continuous challenges faced by the government and growing discontent within the party, he ultimately had to take the decision to step down.
Who will take charge of Britain now?
After Starmer’s resignation, the biggest question is who will be the next Prime Minister of Britain. The situation on this will be clear only after the process of selection of the new leader in the Labor Party begins. For now, Starmer will remain in a caretaker role until the party appoints a new leadership.
