Patna. Preparations have started to give new impetus to the sugarcane industry in Bihar. Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary has given instructions to take major steps towards restarting the closed sugar mills in the state and setting up new sugar mills. The government aims to strengthen the sugar industry, which will increase the income of farmers and create new employment opportunities.
In the review meeting of the Sugarcane Industry Department, the Chief Minister has asked the officials to prepare a concrete plan for the revival of nine closed sugar mills of the state. Along with this, instructions have also been given to work on the possibilities of setting up 25 new sugar mills in Bihar.
Preparations to restart closed sugar mills
The government’s focus is on those areas where sugar mills previously operated. Plans are being made to re-promote industrial activities in areas like Raiyam, Sakri, Sasamusa, Madhaura, Motipur, Samastipur, Chakia, Chanpatia and Motihari. With the opening of these mills, employment opportunities can increase at the local level and sugarcane farmers can get better arrangements to sell their produce.
Modern Food Processing Unit in Hajipur
Food processing sector is also being promoted in Bihar. A plan to set up a modern food processing unit in the industrial area of Hajipur with an investment of more than Rs 17 crore has been approved. Products like ready-to-eat snacks will be manufactured in this unit. This is likely to provide employment to about 200 people.
Emphasis on increasing farmers’ income
The Chief Minister has asked the officials to take necessary steps to increase sugarcane production, improve farming productivity and provide better markets to the farmers. It has also been said that a special plan will be made to develop the Champaran region of Bihar as a major sugarcane production centre. This is expected to provide economic strength to the farmers.

The government is also focusing on attracting new investment in the sugar industry and modernization of old units. There are preparations to make the industry more effective and competitive with the use of modern technology.
