Jammu’s Raghunath Bazaar Ram Temple: Where real gold layer shines on the walls
Srinagar: If you want to understand the history and culture of Jammu closely then it is necessary to see Raghunath Temple. The entire story of the construction of this temple is recorded in the book Tarikh-e-Dogra Desh by historian Diwan Narsingh Das Nargis. The Dogra kings considered it not just a place of worship but also the biggest symbol of the culture and art of Jammu. Even today this temple is a living example of Dogra craft and faith.
Maharaja Gulab Singh had laid the foundation
The construction of this grand temple was started in 1835 by Dogra king Maharaja Gulab Singh. The plan was so big that it took decades to complete the work. During this time Maharaja Gulab Singh died. After him, his son Maharaja Ranbir Singh fulfilled his father’s dream.
After continuous work, the temple was completely completed around 1860. That means it took 25 years to take its current form. This structure built over such a long time remains the identity of Jammu even today.
Court of the family deity of Dogra kings
The main sanctum of the temple is dedicated to Lord Rama, who is called Raghunath Ji here. Raghunath ji has been the family deity of Dogra dynasty. As soon as you step inside, you feel a different peace in the atmosphere.
The high peaks of the temple are visible from a distance. This is the reason why devotees going to Mata Vaishno Devi also come here to pay obeisance. Today this temple has become the identity of the entire Jammu city.
Gold decorated walls and intricate carvings
The biggest feature of the temple is the layer of real gold on its walls. The carvings in the sanctum sanctorum and the inner rooms have been coated with a fine layer of gold. When the lamps and sunlight fall on it during morning and evening aarti, the entire temple shines like gold.
The figures of Gods and Goddesses carved on stones are a testimony to the craftsmanship of the artisans of that period. This shine of gold makes the temple different from other places.
All Gods and Goddesses under one roof
The huge courtyard of the Raghunath temple complex is no less attractive. Small temples of almost all the major deities of Hindu religion including Shiva, Durga, Ganesha, Radha Krishna have been built in the same complex.
For this reason it is also called the center of temples. Devotees get to see many forms at one place. This is the reason why this temple still gives a sacred identity to Jammu in the country and the world.
