World’s best… Statue of world’s first surgeon Sushruta sits in Scotland’s ancient surgical college

It was proved once again that India is the best in the world assembly. A statue of Sushruta, the world’s first surgeon, sits in the world’s oldest surgical college in Edinburgh, Scotland. This initiative is seen by many as an international recognition of the ancient medical science of India.

The world’s first surgeon Sushruta is known as the ‘Father of Plastic Surgery’. His ‘Sushruta Samhita’ deals with the methods of surgery and plastic surgery in ancient India. There is disagreement about his period, but he is believed to have lived around 600 BC. A statue of him has recently been erected at the ‘Royal College of Surgeons’ in Edinburgh. Professor Chandra Cheruvu, a British surgeon of Indian origin, took the initiative to install the statue. It is known that this statue of bronze weighing about 90 kg has been built by a few sculptors of Tamil Nadu.

Indian Embassy in Scotland thanked Professor Cheruvu for his initiative. They wrote on their X-Handle, ‘This event celebrates India’s ancient medical-tradition, the historic relationship between India and Scotland in medicine and surgery. The ‘Royal College’ has played an important role in the spread of surgical education around the world. Special thanks also to Professor Chandra Cheruvu.’
