Amar Ilyas: Three brothers who raped and exploited girls as young as 12 in Rotherham and Sheffield have been jailed as part of a long-running criminal investigation into ‘grooming gangs’. The accused, Amar Ilyas, who goes by the nickname ‘Killer’, has pleaded guilty to 20 old exploitation offences, including 13 counts of rape, against five young victims.

Three of the girls were 13 years of age or younger when the abuse took place in the 2000s, while the oldest girl was only 18 years old. On Monday, the judge called 41-year-old Amar a ‘coward’. It is a different matter that till now he has not been punished because he had fled to Pakistan even before the sentence was pronounced and is still absconding. Now he has been sentenced to 27 years in prison in his absence.

During a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court, it was revealed that Amar Ilyas brutally intimidated girls in the South Yorkshire city. After this, he bit one victim and forced others to do exploitative activities by showing a gun and threatening gang rape.

Amar sentenced to 10 years imprisonment

Judge Peter Hampton told authorities to use ‘every possible means’ to bring him back to the UK. His younger brothers Qamar (39) and Kamran (38) were sentenced to 10 years and three years in jail respectively for sexual offences. The brothers were finally arrested in June 2020 by National Crime Agency officials under ‘Operation Stovewood’. This was an approximately £90 million operation which investigated allegations of grooming and exploitation in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. It is the largest operation of its kind in the UK. Officers made contact with a woman who was identified as a victim of child abuse.

She told that Amar had raped her and after this four other victims were identified. 41 year old Amar Ilyas, known by the nickname ‘Killer’. He has been sentenced in his absence to 27 years in prison for raping five girls.

The accused were convicted under the National Crime Agency’s ‘Operation Stovewood’ investigation. She said the brothers humiliated their victims after forcing them to have sexual intercourse with them. After this they made fun and insulted him also. The court was told the trio abused the vulnerable girl at various locations in Sheffield between 2004 and 2008, when she was just 12 years old. She was introduced to Amar by her brother Qamar, who obtained her mobile number and had a relationship with her before handing it over to his brothers.

During the hearing, the court was told that after this, Amar raped the ‘lonely and weak’ girl every week for three years. She told that once Amar had given her a cigarette mixed with crack cocaine before raping her. Another time, Amar showed the girl the handgun kept in his car and then took her to a forest area and raped her.
