“I cried the whole night, then Suvendu took care of me…” This statement of Mahua Moitra created a major earthquake in Bengal politics.
Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has monopolized power in West Bengal for a long time, is currently going through its worst and very difficult phase. After the crushing defeat at the hands of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recent assembly elections of the state, the existence of Mamata Banerjee’s party now seems to be in great danger.
On one hand, Mamata Banerjee is fighting alone on the all-round political front after the open rebellion of many senior TMC MPs and MLAs, while on the other hand, her most trusted and most flamboyant firebrand leader of the party, Mahua Moitra, has given such a shocking statement, after which claims of her leaving TMC and changing sides are being made increasingly in the political circles.
Mahua Moitra calls Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari her ‘troubleshooter’
Mahua Moitra, TMC MP from Krishnanagar seat of West Bengal, in a recent and frank interview given to BBC, has praised her own party’s arch rival and current Chief Minister of West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari. Mahua Moitra has described state CM Suvendu Adhikari as her very close and good friend. Along with this, Mahua has also shared a very emotional and old unheard story related to her early political life in front of the country.
Mahua Moitra said- ‘When TMC did not give the ticket, I cried the whole night; Then Suvendu consoled me.
Mahua Moitra, known for her aggressive and sharp political style from Parliament to the streets, made a big disclosure that Suvendu Adhikari had helped her a lot during the worst and frustrating phase of her political journey. Referring to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Mahua Moitra said that at that time she had full hope of getting the Lok Sabha ticket from TMC, but at the last moment, Mamata Banerjee’s party flatly refused to give her the ticket.
Mahua told that she was so hurt and heartbroken by this unexpected decision of TMC that she sat and cried the whole night. In that very delicate moment of despair, Suvendu Adhikari was the only leader who came to him and consoled him, handled him very well and boosted his lost courage.
Suvendu Adhikari had said- ‘No sister, I am here’
MP Mahua Moitra further told that during that emotional moment, Suvendu Adhikari had said to her with great affection, “No sister, I am here.” Mahua openly admitted that such emotional and true bonds remain in the heart for life. He further said that even though today both of them are in completely different political ideologies and parties and there is no direct communication between them, but at one time this human relationship between them was very deep, sacred and real.
When Suvendu became ‘Sankatmochan’ in the initial journey of Mahua Moitra
Recalling the days of her initial difficult political journey, Mahua Moitra told that in the year 2016, when she first tried her luck in the election field from Karimpur Assembly seat, Suvendu Adhikari was working as TMC Observer of Nadia district. Mahua said in clear words that despite the complete indifference of many other big and senior leaders of TMC in that very difficult election, Suvendu Adhikari was the only leader who came to campaign openly on the ground in her support. Mahua said that this great help given at the time of crisis in life can never be forgotten, even if today both of them stand in diametrically opposed camps.
Will Mahua Moitra really leave Mamata Banerjee’s sinking ship?
Amidst the current internal disunity, factionalism within the Trinamool Congress and big questions being raised on the top leadership, these statements of Mahua Moitra have strengthened the speculations of political experts 100 times more that she may soon go with Suvendu Adhikari.
A large section within the party has already raised the alarm of rebellion under the strong leadership of Ritabrata Banerjee and Kakoli Ghosh. At such a critical time, this very soft and friendly attitude of Mahua Moitra towards the top leader of the BJP camp and the Chief Minister of the state can prove to be another devastating and big blow for Mamata Banerjee in the coming days.
Suvendu Adhikari was once Mamata Banerjee’s closest commander.
Let us tell you that even though today Suvendu Adhikari is the Chief Minister of West Bengal and a big face of BJP, but like Mahua Moitra, Suvendu Adhikari was also once counted among the very close commanders and strategists of Mamata Banerjee. He was the strongest pillar of TMC for a long time. Suvendu had left Mamata Banerjee and joined BJP just before the historic assembly elections of 2021. After his arrival, the graph of BJP in the state continued to grow rapidly and finally after the bumper and landslide victory in the 2026 assembly elections, he became the new Chief Minister of West Bengal.
Mahua Moitra came into politics after leaving her lucrative job as an investment banker.
Mahua Moitra’s personal and professional career has also been very interesting. Before entering politics, Mahua was working as a highly successful investment banker for the famous global financial institution ‘JPMorgan Chase’ in big international cities like New York and London. But for the sake of serving the country, she suddenly left her luxurious job worth lakhs and returned to India and entered politics.
Mahua Moitra officially joined Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress party in 2010. After this, she was elected MLA for the first time from Karimpur seat in the 2016 assembly elections. Seeing her ability, the party gave her a ticket from Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 general elections, from where she won by a huge margin and reached the Parliament of the country for the first time. After this, Mahua again hoisted the flag of her spectacular victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the same Krishnanagar seat. Now it remains to be seen which way this camel of Bengal politics will turn in the coming days.
